The Base Story

To celebrate World Book Day 2024 we have decided to do something a little different an write our own story the story of how The Base came to be.

Chapter One - Where It All Began

The Base started as an idea over a coffee one Sunday morning in the early months of 2019. Was it going to become a reality? At this point it was unclear but the dream was ignited and we knew it was something that could become a success not just for ourselves but for other local small businesses in Derby to thrive and support each other.  Plans for the Base took off in the latter months of 2019 with encouragement from our friends and family. We took the leap of faith, and at this point, it was just the two of us and our accountant but we believed in it from the start. envisioned a well-being hub with a coffee bar at the heart of the building for all our visitors to enjoy and relax.

Chapter Two - Creating The Brand

After deciding on the name we knew we needed a strong & distinctive logo and with the help of a local designer, the triangle was born. The Base of the triangle is our strong foundations and the tip of the triangle is the summit and our aim to be the best we can be.

Chapter Three - Getting The Keys

Deciding on the location was tricky, we had a lot of boxes to tick and there was very little freehold commercial property available. When this came on the market we knew it was meant to be! The space was amazing, with so much potential, lots of car parking and in a great location.We finally got the keys in July 2020 and celebrated with a bottle of fizz. Works started very next day.

Chapter Four - The Big Base Build

Things were a bit crazy after COVID and we were travelling all over just to get bags of plaster and building materials. It was a huge challenge to get the building ready but with our passion, strong will to succeed, many long hours and after hard work we made it happen. The Base doors finally opened in September 2020 and we celebrated with some of the new businesses in the building, and The Base Bar was born!

Chapter Five - The Base Bar

The Base Bar started with a small but dedicated team of two, a coffee machine and a few locally made brownies & tray bakes. Today we have grown to a talented team of 10, passionate about delivering exceptional quality in all areas of our business. We have elevated our menu, designed our own app, partnered with Delivery providers, created exceptional buffets and so much more.

Chapter Six - Our Growth

Over the past three years, The Base has seen huge changes and growth. We have a great group of small businesses working here, we have private and corporate clients hiring our studios and bar area and we have established a firm footing for the future. We are supporting local charities, trusts and professional sports persons, sourcing many of our products for The Base Bar from small local businesses as well.

Chapter Seven - Challenges

However, this hasn't come to be without its challenges some of which we still face day-to-day. For us, COVID was a big challenge being a new business and not being eligible for support but we are determined and adapted to the circumstances. Recently we have been faced with a huge increase in running costs, a challenge many businesses have and continue to face.

Chapter Eight - The Future

Our future goals and plans are to continue to have a building where every business thrives and people support and celebrate each other’s successes. For The Base Bar to continue to grow our brand and reputation for being the best provider of quality coffee, treats and nutritious house-cooked food. To keep putting The Base Bar and The Base on the map as an exceptional and unique venue.

The End For Now

We can’t thank all of our wonderful customers enough for supporting us and our journey and we are so lucky to have such amazing people enjoying the space we built up three years on! Every coffee break spent with us, delivery order placed, buffet, hire, like, share, comment and review means so much to all of The Base Bar team. As well as supporting the businesses that work under The Base roof. Thank you!
